My youngest of 5 brothers has downs syndrome and like you, he has changed our lives for the better. Today he is 36 years old and lives in a community living environment contributing to society with a regular job. Who would ever guess that I would end up being his legal guardian and number one advocate for the past 20+ years - a role I was honored to take on? You are doing all the right things - embrace every accomplishment and remain proud. He has a lot more to teach you. You will see! I decided to post an email I sent Katie in response to one of her Blogs.

Ok as I sit here and try to see the keys to type I'm wiping the tears from my cheeks. OMG!!!! I was just reading your Blogs and I read the one about Logan at Hunt's. WOW!!! For some reason it is making me cry like a baby. Just reading that you are so happy with Hunt's and the nice things you said about us makes my heart so happy!!! So as I sit here and cry happy tears I thought I would comment on your Blogs. BUT I DONT KNOW HOW!!!!! How do I become a follower if I don't have a Goggle account? How do I write my own Blog? I love this idea!!! If it is too hard to explain in writing I can wait until Monday and you can tell me how to do it. I'm going to print that Blog and show it to the teachers at Hunts. Also, the one about you worrying about Logan having friends.....All I can tell you is right now in the three's program he has TONS of friends. The children fight over who can sit next to him, who can play with him alone, and so on. It is so funny to watch because Logan is just like "whatever...line up and I'll get to you when I have time". LOGAN IS AWESOME and he is very liked!!! I have even had parents come in and ask me who Logan is because their child comes home and talks about him and tells them how much fun they had with Logan that day. Funny though because I worry about my middle child and making friends. He is so shy (don't know where he got that) and it is some times painful to watch him socially. When I hear other boys are getting together and he just sits back and watches or waits to be included, it KILLS me!!! His two brothers always have plans, but not Travis, he will just plug along and be happy with whatever! I am finding that me pushing him to take initiative with planning is helping. He has always struggled in school, he is Dyslexic, and works his butt off to get good grades, while his brothers do the bare minimum and get great grades.. UGH motherhood is so hard!!! Anyway, I'm getting off track, I just want to say thanks for your kind words and for sharing Logan with us!! I know it is hard not to worry, but just know that he is doing great at school and has many friends. You actually should be worried about what a "ladies man" he is. Girls LOVE him!!!!! Have a great weekend and I'll talk to you on Monday. Love you guys!!!! Kelley
P.S. Tell Maddie I have PLENTY of lipstick for her next year when she is in my class!!! LOL!!! Reading your post took me back to when Sara...Katie,
Reading your post took me back to when Sarah started kindergarten. I also worried about everything, and had a very similar experience with kids not wanting to play with her. I distinctly remember her dad and I taking her to an evening social event at Sacred Heart of Mary School, the school Sarah was attending at the time. We were sitting at a table with some of her classmates, then all of a sudden, a couple of the girls got up and moved to another table. I asked them if everything was ok, and they said they didn't want to be around Sarah because she was "bad" in school. Their perception of "bad" was Sarah not finishing her coloring worksheet...we didn't know back then that she had a learning disability which affected her motor skills. All these girls knew was that the teacher was punishing Sarah for not finishing her work! I couldn't stay another moment that night and cried all the way home. Sarah and her brother, Ryan, have both dealt with this type of treatment. Sure, my kids are "different"...Sarah with her LD and Ryan with Aspergers...but they're two of the most loving, caring, compassionate kids who I wouldn't trade for all the money in the world! I know they'll always be there for each other! I know you feel the same about Logan...he'll always have his sisters to look out for him, and I know he'll have friends; it's just so heart-wrenching seeing your child teased or ignored. Sarah recently told me she was sorry for everything I have to deal with for both her and Ryan, especially now since I'm on my own with them. I told her never to feel that way...God gave me two wonderful children who just happen to have some challenges. But those challenges are a part of them, and I love them for who they are and wouldn't change a thing about either of them. OOPS...now I'm rambling, Katie! So, no, we're not alone, and it feels so good to be able to share our experiences with others who understand.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12067063316801934833noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-775334573867880063.post-41381059829830824602010-10-07T05:33:36.749-07:002010-10-07T05:33:36.749-07:00This is great!
